This is a PDF digital download for a 37 page, highly detailed building plan with 108 crisp, clear images walking you through every step of the way. This is an Intermediate level, dimensional carpentry project that we have carefully crafted for beginners, with detailed notes and zoomed-in images so your coop turns out perfect, even if this is the first bird house you’ve ever built!
BEGINNER FRIENDLY:
Our plans have been thoughtfully designed to use lumber that is regularly carried by Lowe’s, Home Depot and other nationwide chains. The Shopping List has only 2 types of lumber, six to eight feet in length, which fit inside most midsize SUV’s and minivans for easy transport home. The pressure treated and natural cedar lumber used, plus the recommended exterior grade latex paint, gives your coop a minimum 12 year lifespan. Legs can be in full contact with the ground or set on concrete paver stones.
PERFECT FOR SMALL YARDS:
The finished coop has an interior area of about 8 square feet, weighs only 79 pounds and is able to be picked up and moved by mother and child or two middle school children. It measures 64 inches from the ground to the highest point of the roof peak and sits well below a residential 72 inch (6 foot) fence line. The 2’x4’ coop footprint easily fits in the bed of any size pickup truck if you need to build it elsewhere before bringing it home. Designed to make backyard quail keeping attractive, simple and clean!
TOOLS REQUIRED:
• Chop Saw/Miter Saw (requires minimum 2 days of use if borrowing or renting)
• Drill/Driver with 1/8 and 5/64 drill bits
• Staple Gun with Standard size Staples
• Wire Cutters – 8 inch or larger size pliers recommended; diagonal cutting style is what we used!
• Speed Square/Rafter Square (ours came from Amazon: https://amzn.to/3TSRNNh)
This tool list assumes you already own a tape measure, a pencil for marking cut lines, and a paint brush. A hand saw may be useful for small cuts, especially if renting a chop/miter saw that must be returned quickly. The optional aluminum angle roof cap piece is cut using a hacksaw.
BUILD TIME:
Beginners should allow 3 full days for building, painting (with dry time), attaching the roof, affixing the doors and installing hardware. Experienced hobby carpenters can have the entire coop built in 1.5 days.
HOW MUCH PAINT?
We used ½ gallon (2 quarts) of exterior grade latex paint to fully paint our white coop one color inside and out.
One quart of white for the full interior plus the outside trim and One quart of color paint for the exterior sides and back is all that is needed for a two-color coop! ($35 Paint cost *IS* included in the $250 materials total estimate.)
THOUGHTFUL EXTRAS:
Each page of the building plan features large, high-resolution images – both architectural renderings and real life photographs – to guide you every step of the way, even if this is your first building project. A vibrant yellow warning icon alerts you ahead of time to beware of common errors you may encounter on certain steps. Additional measurements and directions are provided should you wish to change a solid wall to hardware cloth or select different roofing materials. Also included are door and sidewall area measurements, detailing what size wreaths, lantern hangers, signs and décor will fit your coop. We custom crafted this coop ourselves and can be reached at any time if you have questions!
EASY CLEANING:
Our coop features a unique double door system, created by Brian Silver of The Silver Homestead. The smaller center door gives you quick, everyday access to collect eggs and refill feeders. The wide width front door opens all the way down, allowing full reach to every nook and cranny. It is a brilliant way to keep your coop tidy and clean!
HOW MANY BIRDS DOES IT HOUSE?
The interior is an almost perfect 8 square feet of living space. Coturnix Quail need ½ square foot of space per bird and while our coop can house up to 16, we feel that 12 quail, or 10 females and 2 males, is a perfect number. Can also comfortably keep up to 6 bantam Seabright chickens, 4-6 Silkies or one breeding pair of many types of game birds. Able to be used as a grow-out pen for up to 12 chicken chicks under 8 weeks of age. If a roost bar is added, it will sleep 3-4 full size, adult Dual Purpose breed Chickens. It also makes a secure rabbit hutch for 1 bunny!
INTERIOR HEIGHT:
The coop has an interior ceiling height of 29.5 inches from the floor to the highest point under the roof. This is BELOW the “kill height” for startled coturnix quail and allows the coop to be used for other breeds of poultry if desired.
