Mice, rats, and squirrels get into everything, especially the scratch grain, seeds, and commercial pellets you give to your flock. Here is what I use to safely store 50 pounds of any type of feed away from their voracious teeth. Plus free vinyl-ready labels so everything is organized and visually appealing! Set up these rodent proof, cute chicken feed bins this weekend:
Rodent Proof Cute Chicken Feed Bins
Let’s get right to it. I have been using the Vittles Vault brand 50 pound feed bin to store my chicken feed for over 5 years. (Afflink) We have never – not even once – had an issue with a mouse or rat getting into any of it. I consider them a fantastic investment that keeps my feed dry and secure. Even better, they fit perfectly on these heavy duty metal shelves from Lowe’s.
Vittles Vault Additional Sizes
For meal worms I use the 25-30 pound Vittles Vault size container. They also come in a 20 pound bucket version and a stackable 40 pound design. I suggest selecting a little larger size so you have room to keep a scoop in the bin and still secure the lid on tightly. A 50 pound bag of pellets or crumbles will not fill the 50 pound bin to the rim, because the bits are small and will settle, but 50 pounds of large dog kibble will fill it to the brim. (Afflinks)

Where Do I Buy the Vinyl Labels?
Etsy to the rescue! We partner with Black Acre Designs for all your farm’s vinyl labeling & lettering needs. If you have a Cricut or Silhouette machine that can handle SVG files, all you need to do is download and cut!
Labeled Bins Encourages Family to Help
If you feel like you get little to no help with the chicken chores, label the feed bins! Family members find the GIANT labels easy to read so they can refill the bins with the feed store bags you just purchased…without getting the laying hen, chick and quail game bird crumbles mixed up! Everyone will feel more confident helping out when it comes to feeding.
Easy for Pet Sitters
If you want to go on vacation and leave a neighbor in charge, labeled feed bins make a pet sitter’s job so much easier! There’s no confusion about what feed is where and who eats what. You’ll love the organized simplicity!
Rodent Proof Chicken Feed Storage
I have never hat rats or mice even attempt to chew through my bins. The Vittles Vault brand are thick plastic with sturdy, airtight lids. There are other knock-off brands I have not tried made of thinner plastic. Skip those. Instead, if you want a budget-friendly way to store feed, opt for 5 gallon buckets with Gamma Lids. (Afflinks) Simply unscrew the lid and use a rubber mallet to hammer the lid ring onto any 5 gallon bucket, then screw back on the top lid. Easy!
How Long do Vittles Vaults Last?
Our very first Vittles Vault was purchased in 2010 for dog food and is still being used as of this writing 14 years later! My chicken bins were purchased in 2018 and look as good as new. You can expect a minimum of 10 years out of your bins, if not longer. Buckets with gamma lids last about as long but the center of the lids are prone to cracking if you set something over 40 pounds on top of them.
Weevils & Bugs Contained
If you’ve ever gotten a contaminated bag of feed that seemed to explode overnight with moths, weevils or other bugs, you know how frustrating this is. These pests cannot escape the airtight Vittles Vault! None of your other feed will be affected and they won’t get out into your garage, barn or storage room either. Whew!
Enjoy Your Organized Supplies!
Your rodent proof chicken feed bins will give you years of worry-free service and look very nice while doing so! I hope you enjoy the freebies and your newly organized storage space.
No, but whoever you order your cut vinyl lettering from can! Make sure to send her the SVG files you downloaded or provide a link directly to this page so she can download them herself. Her vinyl cutting software will give her the ability to customize the design for you. Be sure to provide the font name Apple Garamond Bold and a link to it.
No. The free SVG files have all of the text turned into a vector image that a vinyl cutting machine can “see” and cut out. If you’d like your labels to be in a different font, you can request that from the Etsy seller who cuts the vinyl for you.
Yes! You or the person cutting the vinyl for you can pair the chicken shapes with a different font. This will require using software that accepts vector graphic SVG files. The original designs were made using Adobe Illustrator.
