You don’t need a dedicated potting shed to create a cute and functional storage space. I’ve turned one small, three by three foot corner of my garage into a garden tool organization nook using two home-built storage pieces and a bit of paint.
Garden Tool Organization Nook
Minimalist Garden Organization
I love the concept of minimalism and I embrace it wherever I can. When it comes to garden tools, I only need a few good quality items and I enjoy having them organized in a visually pleasing way. Even when I don’t have the time to putter about in the yard, I adore how inviting this setup looks, just beckoning me to get outside.
Turn An Empty Corner into a Garden Tool Nook
When I walk out my garage door, this corner is the first thing I see. When we moved in it was a cobweb-strewn blank canvas. My husband and son gave me the garden tool hanger and cabinet as gifts. (I am so incredibly lucky to be married to such a handy craftsman!)
How Can I Create This Look?
Similar cabinets and hook racks can be found at Home Goods and on Etsy or Amazon for not much more than the $50 in materials that were used to create these. Measure your space and start the hunt for a piece that is deep enough to house your pruners and has enough hooks for your favorite trowels. Small hooks can usually be added to the side of a cabinet you like, giving you two organizers in one if you have limited wall space.
Find What You Love
My cabinet features a hardware cloth door but you may have better luck searching for “chicken wire cabinets” to find the same look. Both Etsy and Amazon gave me fantastic search results using that term. Another option may be to spruce up a garage sale find with chicken wire or hardware cloth, both of which are sold by the roll at home improvement stores.
Consider A Splash of Wall Paint
We didn’t paint our whole garage. One left side wall and the 3 foot wide skinny wall next to the garage bay is all we painted, which delineated the area where I store my chicken feed and gardening supplies. I thought it was sweet of my husband to paint the walls a crisp bright white color, as opposed to painting a line down the middle of the garage floor to ensure my buckets, feed bins and bags of potting soil didn’t encroach on his workshop area. He’s brilliant and knew I would gravitate towards the cute side of the garage and leave his saw-dusted space alone!
What are your Tools Hanging From?
how did you get the letters on there?
I used my Silhouette to cut the black vinyl lettering from Oracal 631 vinyl. The font is Sugarplum by Tart Workshop from CreativeMarket.com.
What’s In Your Cabinet?
I think I’ve mentioned before that I favor the buy-once-cry-once mentality. I enjoy owning good quality tools that will last for decades. After breaking a couple pairs of pruners and cheap garden shovels, I invested in tools that will give me a lifetime of use on our mini homestead.

The tools
Fiskars Micro-Tip Pruning Snips
I’ve been trimming my tomato plants with these since 2015 and they are still going strong. The fine point is perfect for seedlings and making precise cuts, as well as general vegetable garden pruning and herb harvesting. The new ones feature non-stick blades so sap and moisture roll right off. I seriously love these pocket-sized snips!
Felco F2 Classic Pruning Shears
I suggest buying Felco pruners at your local garden center to avoid knock-off versions being sold at Felco quality prices online. Felcos are wonderful, they slice through brush and bramble effortlessly and I wish I had bought them sooner. These make a great gift for anyone who gardens or owns property.
Carrot Design Newspaper Pot Maker
This heirloom wooden contraption makes seedling pots out of newspaper! It’s handy for creating inexpensive, compostable pots so you can give garden starts to neighbors or teach children how to grow seedlings.
Heirloom Seeds
I prefer heirloom seeds and I buy them from everywhere. At the moment I am growing black cherry tomatoes from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, who send a free packet of seeds with every order, which I thought was a nice gesture.
I’ve added a second one of these to my wish list because this one has become a family favorite and keeps walking off. I love how unbelievably comfortable it feels in my hands, how the sharpened edge powers through roots, the way the tip doubles as a bag opener and that it is completely indestructible. This is a garden tool that will last for decades.
Do You Have a Spare Weekend?
It didn’t take long to complete our garden tool organization nook and I use it almost daily. It was a cute way to keep my garden gloves handy and protect my tools from the elements while looking much more put-together than I usually do when I’m working outside!
