Every year the sights and sounds of fall lure us into the kitchen to bake something deliciously pumpkiny. Recipes often call for pumpkin pie spice and nothing can wreck your mood like not having the ingredients on-hand to make that sweet, scrumptious autumn dessert right now. Here is how to make a delicious, homemade pumpkin pie spice mix from scratch in under ninety seconds!
Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice Mix
Autumn, Here I Come
I have a confession: I don’t buy commercial pumpkin pie spice. I’ve always made my own but until now I’ve never written down the recipe. Or ever really had a recipe. Anything calling for pumpkin pie spice got a quick smattering of mixed spices and it all turned out beautifully. As we approach another fall and the number of online recipes calling for this spice seems to have quadrupled, I decided it was time to actually write out how I make my blend.
It’s Super Easy
The blend uses five ground spices: cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, ginger and cloves. That’s it. Most of these spices are probably in your cabinet now. I prefer having basic spices and making my own blends because it saves money in the long run and I can use the individual spices in other recipes. Enough talk, let’s mix this up!
Silver Homestead Pumpkin Pie Spice Mix:
1 Tbsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground nutmeg
½ tsp ground ginger
1 tsp ground allspice
¼ tsp ground cloves
Directions:
Add each ingredient to a spice jar, close and rotate to combine. The pumpkin pie spice is ready for use and will keep for years! Makes 1 and 3/4 Tablespoons (around 5 teaspoons or almost 1 ounce) of pumpkin pie spice.
How to Use
This mix can be used tablespoon-for-tablespoon just like commercial pumpkin pie spice because it uses the exact same spices but you get to control what quality spices are used. The fragrance is amazing and you get the sweetness of the cloves and ginger without any painful bite using these measurements.
Sugar and Spice
This blend makes a fantastic pumpkin pie spiced sugar. Simply mix 3 Tablespoons of granulated sugar with 1 Tablespoon of the spice mix in an empty spice shaker. Use in place of cinnamon sugar or as a topping over buttered toast, oatmeal, popcorn, whipped cream, cheesecake or anything that needs a little taste of fall! When the pumpkin pie spice mix is combined with brown sugar, it makes an irresistible cinnamon roll filling that will make your house smell amazing while baking!

Sweet Gift
A jar of this spice blend and a handwritten pumpkin recipe card makes a cute gift! Or, if you like your recipe cards to all match, you can download the printable version above with both the spice mix and sugar blend together on one card. All you need is a scrap of twine or ribbon to tie around the jar and you’ve got a much-appreciated hostess or teacher’s gift ready to go!
Add a Cute Label
I store some of my spice mixes in small mason jars because the wider opening makes it easier to scoop the spices out by the tablespoonful. I tripled the recipe to fill this jar and created a label to fit the lid. Vinyl cutting software will often allow you to import the JPG design if you’d like to make a vinyl label. I used Oracal 631 vinyl in color 391 Persimmon for mine. Otherwise the PDF download can be printed and cut to quickly label the top of the jar! The font used to create the word art is Magnolia Sky.
