Our move out of the suburbs to a sunny farmhouse on an acre of land began with a single text, as a joke, from my husband.
One text changed it all
Two years previous, Brian had taken a new job on the northwest side of town which was an hour commute from our suburban neighborhood. We made do but as a hint that he would like to move a bit closer to work, he would occasionally text me listings of houses for sale.
He was only kidding. I wasn’t.
On Friday January 12, 2018 at 3:36 pm my husband sent the text that changed our lives. It was a house for sale, and he commented that this house out in the country had a shorter commute than what he was driving now. Was I sure I didn’t want to move?
When the image of the house popped up on my screen I laughed and intended to ignore it. Until my heart began beating faster all on its own and I felt something drawing me to look closer. I had no idea that area of town was country homes.
I replied and requested he contact his realtor friend because I wanted to see the house. He thought I was calling his bluff. I wasn’t. Forty eight hours later we toured the house, which we did not purchase, but it began a five month-long search for our own little homestead.
then & now
We found our farmhouse in late May. It was one we had passed over for months because the listing picture looked terrible.
We said good-bye to beloved friends and moved an hour across town to begin our dreams. We have lived here happily ever since, learning with each new project, plant or animal acquired what it takes to grow our own food, maintain a mini-orchard, raise chickens and embrace a natural, nature-filled lifestyle.
If you are dreaming of making the same move with your family, stay with us a while and let me share what we experienced throughout our move:
