for My Favorite Time of the Year
Fall is my absolute favorite season. After surviving another sweltering south Texas summer, that first cold front has me donning fuzzy socks and flipping through my recipe book for something that oozes sweet cinnamon and perhaps features a bit of pumpkin and cloves. I love the look and feel of pumpkins, with their honest, earthy texture and festive shades. In September my collection of pumpkin decor makes a debut, where I ignore Halloween altogether and enjoy my adorably plump ‘kins until it is time to decorate for Christmas.
The Harvest Hearkens Us Back
There is something about the harvest season that reminds everyone of small-town farms and leaves us yearning for a return to our roots. We often indulge in apple picking, pumpkin patches, fall festivals and corn mazes to scratch the itch many of us feel. Bushel baskets, apple cider, cinnamon sticks, just-harvested field crops and long-stemmed pumpkins bring such natural joy to the autumn months because they remind us of a farming heritage we have not yet fully lost.
Little Orange Lovelies
I squeal a little the first time I pull up to the grocery store to find heaping crates of orange, cream and peach pumpkins spilling over onto nearby hay bales. Their delightfully squashed, warty faces are just so darned alluring! We actually eat ours, roasting the seeds and turning the flesh into homemade puree for muffins and pies. Is it any wonder that these gorgeous gourds made their way on to one of our recipe cards?
